10 Dead-Simple Tips To Boost Your eCommerce Conversion Rate
Running a profitable ecommerce store goes way beyond simply setting up an online store, adding products, and driving traffic to it. There are a lot more steps you need to take to reach the point where you’re able to consistently increase your ecommerce conversion rate to generate a high amount of sales and earn a decent monthly income.
What’s important to understand is that sales don’t just happen. In order to for ecommerce conversion rate to be increased is to optimize the sales process. And provide visitors with a comprehensive shopping experience.
If you’re looking to start an ecommerce store, or already have one up and running. But aren’t earning enough to make it sustainable. Here is a collection of simple tips and strategies you can use to improve your ecommerce conversion rate and drive more sales:
Tip #1 – Use High-quality Images
An image says a thousand words. Poor quality images signal to your customers that they’re dealing with someone unprofessional, and immediately raise doubt in their minds regarding the quality of the actual product.
On the other hand, high-quality images instill trust by allowing the customers to carefully inspect every detail of the product. And make sure that they know exactly what they’re getting.
Remember, the only way for them to interact with products in an online store is through images. They can’t try it out or put it on. That’s why it’s vital that your images are of the highest possible quality, and that they showcase every possible detail.
That’s why it’s recommended to also feature multiple images of the product, captured from all the different angles that, highlighting all the relevant features.
Tip #2 – Provide Free Shipping
In a world where competition is around every corner, you need to provide the customers with every possible advantage you can offer them.
You want to ensure they keep buying from you, rather than one of your competitors. One of the strategies you can’t afford to overlook is offering free shipping.
Nearly every ecommerce store provides this perk to its customers, and you’ll have to do the same, if you want to keep up with the tight competition.
It doesn’t have to be the case for every single product, but it’s a good idea to offer the free shipping service for orders above $30*. (differs by product price range)
This doesn’t necessarily have to mean that you’re generating less profit, either. More often than not, retailers compensate for the money lost on providing free shipping by slightly increasing the prices of their products.
If you’re tight for money, you can do the same.
Tip #3 – Streamline Your Checkout Process
You don’t want your checkout page to be a hindrance or an obstacle a customer has to go over, in order to complete the purchase. Understand that consumers are usually impatient, and they don’t want to waste time on a complex and lengthy checkout process.
In the moment when they have made the decision to purchase a product. You want to make it as simple as possible to go through the payment process and place their order.
Don’t make the customer go through a multiple-step checkout process, if it’s not absolutely necessary. Also, don’t ask for any information that isn’t necessary to complete the purchase.
Here’s an example of a brand that understands the importance of a streamlined checkout process:
Notice that the entire process is immediately visible, from the moment customer arrives at the page.
Tip #4 – Let Them Buy As Guests
This ties into our last tip. I’m sure you’ve shopped online before, and you’ve probably noticed that certain stores require you to create an account and register, before you can place your order.
It’s frustrating, isn’t it? The reasoning why some stores pretty much force the customers to create accounts on their websites is to generate email leads.
However, this is not the approach you want to take, since, like I mentioned, you want to clear any possible obstacles in the checkout process.
Instead, you can simply add a checkbox people can select when finalizing the purchase, in case they want to subscribe to your newsletter and receive new offers in the future.
That way, you’re still getting a lead without risking needlessly frustrating the customer and potentially losing on a sale.
Tip #5 – Leverage Cart Abandonment Software
People will abandon their carts from time to time, and there’s not much you can do about it. They might have seconds thoughts. Or don’t feel comfortable spending the money on that product at that moment.
What you can do, however, is remind them that they left stuff in their cart. And make it really easy for them to pick up right where they left off.
You can do this by simply sending them an email featuring the products they put in their cart (like the example below). And a link to go straight back to the checkout page, with all of their products already there.
Most ecommerce platforms include this feature as a part of store functionality. So you definitely want to take full advantage of it to improve your ecommerce conversion rate.
Tip #6 – Make Sure That Customers Know They Can Safely Shop In Your Store
There are a lot of scammers and bogus websites out there. And customers are, for a good reason, extremely careful when it comes to sharing their credit card details online.
That’s why, in order to gain their trust, and in turn increase your ecommerce conversion rate. You need to clearly demonstrate that your online store is safe and secure.
In other words, your customers need to know that they’re buying from a legitimate store. A store that is following the industry standards when it comes to online security measures.
Here is how you can demonstrate the integrity of your online store and earn the customers’ trust:
Install SSL on your checkout page –
Show images of available payment options –
Keep your website protected –
Tip #7 – Make It Easy For Customers To Find What They’re Looking For
When thinking about your store’s design, one thing you should pay attention to is how your pages are structured. Like I mentioned, you want to provide the customers with a smooth shopping experience.
What that means is that you want to make it as easy and as fast as possible for them to find exactly the products they are looking for.
If you’re selling a wide range of different products, make sure that each product category is featured on your home page.
Also, add filters on each product page, allowing the customers to sort available products. This can be y price, name, date they were added, color, and other relevant fields.
This should go without saying, but whatever you do, don’t forget to add a search bar to your pages. And make it immediately visible, so that the customers can find the product they’re looking for in a matter of seconds.
Tip #8 – Provide detail product descriptions
Describe each product in as much detail as possible, so that the customers know exactly what they’re getting. Remember, they can only reference the picture when shopping online. And product descriptions can be used as a tool to showcase the product’s quality, and persuade them to make the purchase.
By making all the information about the product available on the product page, you’re also preventing the returns.
Another thing you can do to boost your ecommerce conversion rate, is use video descriptions of the products. Along with the images and the descriptions.
Here’s an example video of ‘Burton Annex Pack 28L Backpack’ from Benny’s Boardroom;

Tip: People react well to videos, and seeing the product in action might just be what pushes them over the edge, and convinces them to go through with the purchase. [tweet this]
Tip #9 – Let Your Customers Leave Reviews
Despite how amazing your store looks, how persuasive your copy is, or how good your deals are. Nothing instills the same level of trust, like reviews and testimonials.
When a customer is checking out a product and sees a bunch of positive reviews from other people. You don’t even need to make an effort to convince them that your products are high-quality.
If, however, you don’t have an option for customers to leave their reviews, which signals that there’s something fishy going on. Why wouldn’t you want to let other people know that your existing customers love your products?
The first thing that comes to someone’s mind is that there’s probably a ton of negative reviews. And that the product isn’t quite as good as you make it seem.
So, make sure to always give your customers an option to review your products. In fact, you should even encourage it by offering a coupon code, free shipping on the next order, or another form of incentive for leaving a review.
Tip #10 – Optimize Your Store For Mobile Devices
Everybody owns a smartphone nowadays, and are shopping on their mobile devices. According to Shopify, nearly 50% of people visit online stores using their mobile devices, but only 35% make a purchase, compared to 54% on desktop.
One of the factors that caused sales to drop by nearly 20% when people used phones, iPads, and tablets to do their online shopping, is the fact that a lot of stores aren’t actually optimized to run well on devices other than a computer.
So, in order to maximize your ecommerce conversion rate, you need to keep mobile users in mind. And make sure that your store is optimized for all devices.
The last thing you want to do is lose a customer because your website takes too long to load on a phone or tablet. Or because the UI isn’t optimized to fit the screen of the device, making the shopping experience awkward and frustrating.
